I resent being branded a 'kook' by paper Jul. 19, 2012 12:00 AM I ran for office because I'm concerned about the future of our state and nation. I never thought I'd see the day when the leaders at The Arizona Republic would allow one of their columnists to set up a system to encourage name-calling of state legislators. Laurie Roberts' series titled "De-Kook the Capitol" flies in the face of the supposed quest for civility that The Republic itself has called for. The vast majority of state legislators I work with, whether Democrat or Republican, are good, hardworking people who sincerely want to make a difference. If we called each other "kooks" on the floor of the Legislature, we'd rightly be admonished and disciplined by the House leadership. It's a sad day when the state's major newspaper allows itself to devolve to this point. -- Debbie Lesko, Peoria The writer is majority whip in the Arizona House of Representatives. |
